What’s a heat pump and can my heat pump be repaired?
A heat pump is different from a furnace in that it uses a compressor to heat and cool your home instead of using combustion like a gas furnace. It can also use heat strips on the very cold days to assist in the heating of your home.
What are some of the common heat pump repairs and what do they cost?
Well most common would be the replacement of capacitors which can vary from $149 to $275 installed. We give discounts if there is more than one capacitor that needs to be replaced. Capacitors provide a very important service for your heat pump system. They help motors on startup, keep them in phase while running, and also discharge during operation.
If a heat pump goes bad it can eventually damage your motors and will also result in the use of more electricity, which can cost you money. They usually go out or begin to get weak after the first five years or so of your system. Excessive heat will also make them go bad prematurely. We have the tools to test these components and stock a wide variety of them on our vehicles.
Dirty heat pump filters
A dirty filter is a very common problem because if it is so dirty that air can’t pass thru the system it can cause a myriad of issues some minor some leading to more major things like a clogged coil. Sometimes we come out and find that there are more filters in the system than required which reduces air flow. We can provide excellent permanent filters for your home as well as cleaning the high end systems like Accuclean, Clean Effects, April Aire or others.
Failing heat pump blowers
Another common repair is a failed or failing blower motor or condenser fan motor. These can be costly repairs in the range of about $250 to as high as $900 for some of the more expensive brands of heat pumps. We have universal motors on our vehicles and can replace them on the spot but sometimes we will need to return that day or the next day especially if you would like an original part instead of a universal one.
Problems with refrigerant
Other repairs are related to the refrigerant in the system either leaking out or if a filter drier wasn’t installed. These repairs vary depending on the type of refrigerant and if other things need to be replaced as well such as a thermal expansion valve or new filter drier needed, all of which can affect the price.
Very important to have a professional involved in any type of refrigerant because it is necessary to have an EPA license to work with refrigerants. Plus diagnosing can be quite complex based on temperature, humidity and static pressures in the air system.
Blown fuses are a common repair and usually indicate that there is another problem elsewhere. We will trace the problem back to the cause and make a recommendation. This is one thing that separates a journeyman technician from a newbie is the ability not only to replace a component but also to determine its cause.
Compressor failure is a less common repair. It will be probably the most expensive repair so it is important to have a technician that knows how to properly ohm out the windings inside the compressor and be able to differentiate between mechanical or electrical failure of the unit. Our technicians have been trained to do a complete check on the compressor if it has failed and not just a “quickie condemning” of the unit. This will assure you of a proper diagnosis and solution.
